As the summer draws to a close ...

As the summer draws to a close I want to thank you for your ministry of prayer.  For the past two months there has been an unusual ministry of the Holy Spirit in our midst.  The Lord has provided an abundance of food through Trader Joes and we are giving out thousands of dollars worth every month to the poor and elderly who are coming to our six services. Every week more than two hundred neighborhood people are coming to hear the Word of the Lord.   One of our services is in Chinese and God has provided an individual who speaks fluent Chinese to preach the gospel.  People are asking for a service in Spanish and Russian.  The Lord will provide those preachers too.  For the past six weeks we have had a Sunday Evening service and are studying the Book of Romans with those who come.  Sunday morning we are in the Book of James, Tuesday the Gospel of John, and Wednesday the Sermon on the Mount.  Individuals who have been struggling with a variety of sins are making appointments to come for private counsel and are seeking change through repentance.

We will soon need larger space and are eager to see what the Lord will provide.
We have experienced many of the Lord’s blessings in the midst of great opposition.

We had some wonderful ministry teams who labored with us this summer.  They touched many lives and I know were touched by the city.

God has a sense of humor..
We had the  gospel pantry today and had three groups come and stand in the cold just to get a few dollars of groceries.  Nearly 30 of them were widows and women over 80.  We gave food to over 120 people after our gospel services.

God has a sense of humor.  Last night the director of our pantry and I were talking.  We had only 1 1/2 tables of food.  Enough for about 40 people.  He went to Trader Joe's last night and they had nothing to give us.  Another ministry had cleaned out the donation bin.  Yet he ran into the head manager of the store who is a believer.  The manager said he wanted to visit our services.  He wants to help us.  Robert and I went to bed wondering what was going to happen today.  He got up this morning prayed and went to the Bowery Mission.  When he arrived he couldn't find the individuals who could help us and when he was leaving the building, in walked one of the directors who told him that he had just called him on the phone  and told him to come and get some food.  They had hundreds of fresh whiting fish on ice and hundreds of loaves of bread.  He loaded the bread and fish into the van and drove back to the mission.    Once again God supplied bread and fish for those in need.  My van is going to smell of fish for the next two weeks to remind me of the need to ask Him for daily bread, and realize that He can still multiply bread and fish to supply those who come and hear the gospel of His dear Son.

We had to have four services today to accomodate all the people...
We had to have four services today to accomodate all the people that came--nearly 150.  We preached the gospel from John 4 and the story of the Samaritan woman.  To see Asians, Africans, European, and Spanish people sitting in the same service hearing the gospel was a delight to my soul.  Although we are all tired after a full day everyone of us are eager for Friday to come so we can preach Christ and the gift of God again.  We had over 20 visitors in our Sunday service from the Bread of Life ministry on Tues and Fri.

I do not know why this ministry has opened up so greatly with the loss of this location but I am confident that the Lord is in total control and will make provision for Tompkins Square Gospel Fellowship as well as the mission.

If any of you would like to send a special financial gift to help us continue this outreach it would be greatly appreciated and is definitely needed.

Tuesday we had 145 people come for the gospel service.
Today we had 135 and one of them was an elderly orthodox Jewish woman walking with a crutch dressed in her orthodox garb and wig.  She listened to the preaching of Messiah from John 3.  I do not know if we will ever see her again.  We had a Chinese translator for one of our services which had 1/3 Chinese audience.  I wish we had been doing this type of ministry several years ago.  We are building relationships with people in our community and many are starting to come to our services.

We had 137 people come to the services today

I preached from John 3 and invited the people to believe and if they did to tell me afterwards with their confession of faith.  One man approached me afterwards and told me he believed on the Lord Jesus.  We are getting some of the same individuals to come to two services a week.  We are meeting many believers as well and I am thankful that they are benefiting from the free food too.

Food Ministry
We distributed meat, vegetables, fruits, breads, and milks and eggs to over 250 people this week in four different services  They came into the chapel for a gospel service and we preached Christ from John's gospel.  People are visiting the church services with promises of more to come.  It is wonderful to see Christian people catch the vision that faith produces beneficial deeds not only to the Lord's people but to a lost community.

The poor have the gospel preached to them.  People over 60 years old stood in line for over 2 hours to get 50.00-80.00 worth of grocercies.   The poverty and need in this neighborhood is great, and the kindness shown by the Lord's people is appreciated.  One aged Asian man left the building and cried out serveral times with his finger pointing toward heaven,  "shia, shia, God"  (Thank you God)  This food has been donated to the mission from Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.  The Bowery Mission which houses Fanny Crosby's famous piano has been providing us with food as well.  They have an interest in what we are doing because they have heard we are preaching Christ to those we give the food to.  They have asked to meet with us and we will meet with them Lord willing next week.

First Steps Discipleship PDFs Available!

We have uploaded some PDF documents that we trust will be beneficial for new Christians. We have called it First Steps and it deals with a study of biblical truths to help believers who are attempting to grow and become more like our Lord.

This is not intended to be a deep study of all the truths about these topics, but are designed to give you a good, well-rounded knowledge that will spur on your walk with our Lord.  Take your time as you study each week.  Don't rush through this.  Let your mind be soaked with God's Word, and let heart be massaged with truth.  Be warmed with the light of the very character and essence of God's revelation of Himself to us, His children.

We hope these documents will be a help and blessing to you!

The New York Gospel Mission Needs Your Help!
Friends,

We have a very strategic training center in the heart of Manhattan in the Lower East Village -- but with a substantial mortgage. Lord willing we would like to keep our current facility for our maximum effectiveness in outreach and evangelism, but we are in need of extra financial help in order to do so. Would you pray and consider helping us financially so that we could remain in our current location?

Contact us for details | Thank you for your help.
